LETTER: CAUSING MORE CONFUSION FOR YOUTHS – Commercial Appeal

I agree with Wendi C. Thomas that the “Don’t Say Gay” bill should not be passed.

As a high school student, I believe that prohibiting teachers from talking about any sexual orientation will only cause confusion for the children. If passed, this bill will restrict full and better understanding of gays and lesbians. In fact, many middle school students already have limited knowledge of homosexuality from television shows like “Glee” and “Modern Family.”

This confusion and lack of tolerance will lead to bullying. Many students around the country have committed suicide because they were bullied for being gay. The ones who were bullying probably grew up in an environment in which they were not exposed to or taught about gays and lesbians, and therefore reacted to them with violence.

I believe passing this bill would cause more confusion, bullying and violence among young Tennesseans and increase the number of student suicides among gays.
